WE ARE THE WILLOWS
We Are The Willows is an orchestral indie rock band based out of South Minneapolis. The 6-piece ensemble features songwriter/frontman Peter Miller’s unique countertenor voice and guitar, supported by Jeremiah Satterthwaite (guitar/banjo), Leah Ottman (violin/voice/keys), Hilary James (cello/voice/keys), Travis Collins (bass), and Stephen Lindquist (drums/voice). We Are The Willows craft dynamic, intimate songs with instruments and voices combining to create energetic rhythms and intricate melodies. Their heartfelt arrangements evoke shared nostalgic feelings of love and loss.
The latest album from We Are The Willows, Picture (Portrait), has been a decade in the making. The album is based off of 350 letters written between singer/ frontman Peter Miller’s grandfather and grandmother while he was stationed in the Southwest Pacific during World War II. Their correspondence inspired Peter to explore themes of family, separation, life, death, and identity in a time of national and personal crisis. The songs communicate complex ideas delivered with pop-sensible charm.
Moon Ruin’s Slow Down Ego inhabits a world where gauzy vocal washes glide across sinewy melody, soulful horn charts rise from the sonic mist only to fall away as a twinkling piano runs joust playfully with syncopated electronic percussion. Palpably atmospheric and profoundly transporting, Slow Down Ego is the sound of persistence and sacrifice, born in that flash of a creative gap flitting between real-life obligation.
Slow Down Ego is the creation of Jared Bartman, but it was not formed in a vacuum. Birthed in the refuge of makeshift basement studios, and featuring co-conspirators Mike Noyce and Liam O’Brien, plus Bartman’s wife and children, the record is a tribute to the potential of partnership and the strength it provides; it is a document of community, of friendship, of family.
P • PL
Matt Bedrosian: “P • PL is like attempting to get funky sexy and the vibe changes and you switch to getting down in a different style: conversationally. But you might still get nasty – after a good talk. That’s what P • PL is about to me, and I write the songs.” Dave Power (Aero Flynn/The Staves/’58 Belvedere) plays drums, Emily Kastrul (Sister Species) plays keys, Addie Strei (Adelyn Rose) plays guitar, and Eamonn McLain (Little Fevers/Trampled by Turtles) plays bass.
