Our five piece rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1999 and after playing the Sunset Strip clubs and self-producing EPs for a couple of years, we made our self-titled major label debut and hit the road. We traveled all over the U.S., the U.K. and even made it as far as Japan. We toured with Weezer, The Strokes, Sloan, The Sounds, The Donnas, Travis, Keane and many others.
After our first record reached nearly gold status and yielded two successful singles, we retreated to L.A. where, after many hold ups, we recorded Calling the World over three weeks time. We then toured the world for another year and a half with an eclectic bunch of artists including Ben Lee and The Polyphonic Spree. Our first single off the record climbed to number 1 in Germany and subsequently took us all over Europe multiple times.
2009 found us back in L.A. recording and experimenting in our new home studios while transitioning into a new label situation. We formed our own record label “California Dreamin'” and released our Wild One EP at the end of 2009 and our 3rd full-length release, Eureka!, in June of 2010. Since then, we’ve enjoyed touring with The Crash Kings, The Young Veins, Black Gold, Hanson, and Eisley. We are currently enjoying our return to the independent spirit upon which we were founded and are looking back at a career which now spans over a decade. Thank you to all of our friends and fans who have taken the trip with us…we play for you.
Mating Ritual’s Ryan Marshall Lawhon is a journeyman who can’t sit still. Relocating up and down the west coast twice a year until he was 18, the producer-songwriter has become accustomed to change; the very opposite of a “creature of habit”. His restless need to be on the move is a driving force in the creation of his music.
Driven to push the boundaries of “Alternative” songwriting and production, he continues to release complex yet catchy songs that question the traditional ideals of genre classification. After the hiatus of his prior band Pacific Air, Ryan cranked up his songwriting prolificacy and found immense freedom in the world of independent recording. Uninhibited by appeasing an ideal or genre, Ryan began recording what he calls Post-Genre-Pop under the alias Mating Ritual.
After topping the Spotify viral charts, landing dozens of TV placements and grabbing the Zane Lowe stamp of approval with his self titled EP, Mating Ritual released his debut album How You Gonna Stop It? via his own label, Smooth Jaws, on June 9, 2017. Stereogum called it “Lush, sweeping pop craft tinged with electro energy”, Consequence of Sound said “Think of it like M83’s writing with Car Seat Headrest’s structural tendencies” while Buzzbands claimed it “More beefcake than cheesecake.”
Indie rock outfit Halfloves, previously known as The Olympics, begin a new chapter with their forthcoming self-titled record. The Iowa City-based group has spent the past two years working on the album with reknowned producer Brandon Darner (Imagine Dragons, The Envy Corps). Halfloves mixes pop sensibilities with heady textures and space to create an emotionally charged sound.
